8 Things to do in Melbourne in the Summer

At the end of 2022, I took a leap and moved from Boston to Australia. Since moving here, I have spent more than half of my time living in Melbourne and I absolutely love it. My favorite season of the year is always summer so there’s nothing I love more than a sunny, summer day in Melbourne. Although Australian summer is hotter than hot, you can always find something fun to do that keeps you cool. These are all of my favorite go-to activities for a beautiful summer day and no matter what you choose to do, don’t forget sunscreen!

Relax with a drink on St. Kilda Beach. Although it’s not the nicest beach you’ll find in Australia it’s very easily accessible from the city and you have the option to relax on the sand or in the grass if you don’t want to get sandy. There’s bars and restaurants along the beach so you have options if you want to cool off with a drink or an ice cream! You can also walk out on St. Kilda Pier and get a nice view of the Melbourne skyline. Just a short walk away from the beach is Acland Street where you can pick a cafe and grab a coffee or stroll through all the shops.

Play beach volleyball on Port Melbourne Beach. This beach is a bit bigger than St. Kilda Beach so there’s more space to spread out. There’s lots of beach volleyball courts so on a sunny weekend they fill up quickly. There’s cafes and gelato shops dotted all along the beach so you have plenty of options if you need a snack! Multiple trams run right by Port Melbourne Beach so you can easily get there from the city.

Grab some friends and hop on a GoBoat. I did a GoBoat with a whole group of my girlfriends for Galentine’s Day and we had the best time! You can bring 8-10 of your friends, some food and drinks and cruise the Yarra River for an hour. You are required to have a sober captain so make sure someone is planning on not drinking! There’s multiple companies you can rent from so the cost will vary a little bit. The view of the city from the Yarra is beautiful so it’s a great way to spend a sunny day!

Have a picnic at the Royal Botanic Gardens. There’s beautiful lawns and gardens, a lake with islands and plenty of space to relax and enjoy a picnic! The gardens are huge so you can spend the morning wandering around before finding the perfect shady spot to eat.

Head to St. Kilda and go to Luna Park. You can ride rollercoasters, play arcade games or try some different amusement park snacks. The hours vary depending on the season and school holidays so definitely check the website before you go. You can pay for park entry and one ride or unlimited rides so you can make it a more budget friendly activity. Luna Park is right in St. Kilda so you can hit the beach or head for sunset after!

Head to a rooftop bar, grab a drink and soak up the sun! There’s plenty of rooftop bars to pick from, you can find amazing ones all over the city. Some of my favorites are in Fitzroy, Carlton and Brunswick! A lot of places have happy hour during the week so you can find some pretty cheap drinks if you’re lucky!

Hop on the train and head down to Brighton Beach. You can take the train directly from Flinders Street Station to the beach; you can either get off closer to the beach at Brighton Beach or get off at Middle Brighton and walk through Brighton to the beach. We got off at Middle Brighton and then grabbed a coffee, strolled through the shops and headed to the beach! You can relax on the beach and take some pictures of the Brighton Bathing Boxes. If you go on a sunny weekend, the Brighton Bathing Boxes will be very busy but there’s plenty of space to lay out away from the crowds.

Head down to Point Ormond for sunset. You get a perfect view of the sunset over the water on one side and a beautiful view of the city skyline on the other. Point Ormond is a popular spot so you will not be enjoying sunset alone. There’s a lot of space to sit so you could even do a sunset picnic if you wanted. Point Ormond isn’t far from St. Kilda so it’s a great stop to make after a great day at the beach!
